Tips for the New Warehouse Managers

Warehouses have become an integral part of any industry today. But do not go by the looks of these humongous spaces. These spaces are carefully optimized and strategically located keeping the customers and operations in mind. One small mistake and it can take days and can cost you a fortune to balance the damages. This article is aimed at young warehouse managers and how they can bring efficiency to their warehouses.

Avoid stacking too high

Warehouses, especially the ones dealing with excessive loads, should avoid stacking too high. The vertical stacking of materials to optimize the floor space is good up to a certain extent. Once a shelf comes down, it can destroy the entire structure and hence stack of heavy items should be done carefully. Warehouse shelving is an important concept and hence shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Optimize aisle space

Most managers mismatch the aisle space according to their requirements. A lot depends on what kind of items you are storing. For warehouses dealing with heavy machinery, it is always better to have some extra aisle space. For companies dealing with lighter materials, space doesn’t matter much. The fear of a fall down can haunt you for days and hence extra aisle space is recommended for this purpose.

Take regular tours to your warehouse

Inspection of racking and shelving should be done regularly. It is generally advised that the professionals should be brought for the regular inspections. The workers should also be made aware of the different defects so that they can identify spots whenever they come across one.

Arranging according to the demand

The technique uses fast moving items to be shelved as near as possible. Extra time should not be wasted on such items and hence should be optimized for saving a lot of time in the entire process.

Organizing according to the weight

It is common knowledge to keep the heavy items on or near to the ground and the lighter items on the top. The selves may be capable enough to handle the loads, but better be safe, than sorry.

Warehouse management is a huge topic and involves a lot of planning, depending upon the company’s requirements. With concepts like vertical storage systems, the topic gets wider as one dives deep further. Hence the modern warehouse managers need to be designers themselves. Thorough knowledge of different techniques along with the latest practices needs to be applied to maximize efficiency as much as possible.
